Medical effect: Tegretol tablets are effective for the treatment of the following diseases and conditions:

• focal and generalized seizures in epilepsy,
• manic state in such as manic-depressive psychosis,
• trigeminal neuralgia,
• a second-line agent in bipolar disorder.

Contraindications and precautions: do not use for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Do not use for patients with blood disorder, atrioventricular block, bradycardia or porphyria.

As this medicine may cause dizziness or decreased attention, avoid driving a car, working at heights or operating dangerous machinery. Avoid drinking alcohol, grapefruit juice or taking food or health products with St. John's wort while taking this medication.

If an allergic reaction occurs, stop using the medication and consult with your doctor. If you’re taking any other medication, please consult with your doctor before use.

For the treatment of epilepsy, do not stops taking the drug abruptly unless your doctor tells you to do so. It may increase the risk of sudden seizures.

Dosage and administration of Tegretol tablets 100 mg from Japan (carbamazepine)

For treatment of epilepsy: For adults, start from o.5-1 tablet 2 times a day or 1-2 tablets once a day as an initial dose. Then gradually increase to 3 tablets a day according to the symptoms. The daily dose should not never exceed 6 tablets a day. For children, take 0.5-3 tablets a day in some divided doses according to the age or symptoms under the supervision of the consulting doctor.

For treatment of manic state, excited state: For adults, start with 1 tablet 2 times a day or 1-2 tablets once a day as an initial dose. Then gradually increase to 3 tablets a day according to the symptoms. The daily dose should not exceed 6 tablets a day.

For trigeminal neuralgia: For adults, start with 1-2 tablets a day as an initial dose. Then gradually increase to 3 tablets a day in some divided dose. The daily dose should not exceed 4 tablets. For children, the dose is decreased according to the age or symptoms.

The dosage may be adjusted by the consulting doctor according to age, weight and symptoms.

How effective are Japanese Tegretol tablets 100 mg (carbamazepine)?

Tegretol tablets contain carbamazepine, a sodium channel blocker. It works by binding to voltage-gated sodium channels in their inactive conformation. That leads to sedating excessive excitation of nerves in the brain. By this, Tegretol tablets suppress epileptic seizures, suppresses excessive high tension and suppress abnormal excitation of trigeminal nerve in face.

Who should take Tegretol tablets 100 mg from Japan?

Carbamazepine is listed on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Tegretol tablets are effective for suppressing focal and generalized seizures in epilepsy. Studies showed that after the treatment with carbamazepine 40% of patients became seizure-free, and 30% more had a seizure reduction for more than 50% (N. Callaghan, M. O' Callaghan et al. Carbamazepine as a single drug in the treatment of epilepsy: A prospective study of serum levels and seizure control // Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, 1978, 41, 907-912). However, these tablets are not working against absence or myoclonic seizures. Also, carbamazepine is one of the most effective known medications for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.
